Lagos Govt arrests 165 for open defecation, 3786 for street trading, 6,789 for failure to use pedestrian bridge

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has reaffirmed the mandate to make Lagos cleaner and habitable for business and living as enshrined in the THEMES+ agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Corp Marshal, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), in a statement by Lukmon Àjàyí, of the Public Affairs and Advocacy Unit stresses the commitment to enforcing environmental laws and promoting a cleaner environment for all Lagosians.

He stated that the Agency was combining advocacy and law enforcement in the discharge of its duties. He said 165 defaulters were arrested for open defecation in the state between August 2024 and date.

Commending the operational efficiency of KAI in reducing environmental infractions and nuisances in the state, Cole highlighted the agency’s success in reducing street trading, hawking, and open defecation through its 21 operational commands and special squads.

He also said 3,786 arrests for street trading and hawking, while   6,789  arrests for failure to use pedestrian bridges. Cole added that 192 environmental abatement notices served to residences and businesses in contravention of the state’s environmental laws.

While stressing the importance of continuous stakeholder engagement and resolution mechanisms, he said the agency organised 170 community engagement meetings that yielded great results.
