A 25-year-old man, Joseph Abodunrin, has taken his own life in the Dagbolu community, Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State. He reportedly ended his life due to the high cost of living, which he said was affecting his mental health.
His relative, Abodunrin Grace, confirmed the tragic news on Thursday through her X (formerly Twitter) account. She described Joseph as a caring brother who always encouraged his family, even though he was secretly struggling.
“I still feel shattered. You were the best brother. You encouraged us, but you kept your pain hidden. You always smiled, pretending everything was fine. Now, we can’t get over it,” she wrote.
She added that mental health should be a priority, saying, “We are all struggling. Please take care of your mental well-being. It is important.”
Before his death, Joseph had shared several posts online hinting at his struggles. On January 31, 2025, he tweeted that he only stayed alive for the sake of his younger siblings, who still had dreams and hopes.
On March 24, the day he died, he posted, “I’m sorry I failed you all. I just couldn’t do it anymore. No one will understand, no matter how I explain.”
In another post, he encouraged others to keep fighting for their dreams, adding, “That is my last wish. I gave life everything I had. Now, I am passing on the baton.”
He also left instructions about his personal belongings, saying, “My passwords are on the first page of my diary. Goodbye!”
Earlier in March, he had questioned why he was still alive, saying he had tried to seek help but felt it only made things worse. He called March his “decision month.”
As of now, Joseph’s body has not been found, despite him sharing the location of his suicide. However, checks revealed that the location, ‘Dagbolu,’ is no longer active.
When contacted, the Osun State Police spokesperson, ASP Akeem Adeoye, said he was unaware of the incident but promised to provide updates if there were any developments.
Joseph had celebrated his 25th birthday on February 6, 2025.
