President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Special Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform Initiative.
According to Bayo Onanuga, The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in an announcement, made on Friday, said the appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to driving significant progress in the livestock sector as part of broader national development efforts.
Prof. Jega, a former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, previously co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee alongside President Tinubu. The committee was instrumental in developing far-reaching recommendations aimed at overhauling the sector, including the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Livestock Development, which now has a substantive minister.
At 68, Jega remains an influential voice in governance and policy development. He is currently a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano State.
His tenure as INEC Chairman from 2010 to 2015 was marked by sweeping electoral reforms, including the introduction of biometric voter registration and the card reader system, which significantly enhanced the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
With his new appointment, Prof. Jega is expected to leverage his wealth of experience to consolidate the gains of the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee and ensure the effective implementation of policies that promote sustainable livestock management across the country.
