The power struggle at the Lagos State House of Assembly has taken a dramatic turn as ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa stormed the assembly complex on Thursday, allegedly forcing his way into the Speaker’s office.
Obasa, who arrived around noon with security personnel, made his move shortly after the security aides of current Speaker Mojisola Meranda were withdrawn.
Reports indicate that his team allegedly broke into the office, an action confirmed by Meranda’s Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye.
“We’re at the assembly now,” a source in Obasa’s camp stated, signaling a strong push for his return.
The Lagos Assembly has been in turmoil since Obasa’s removal and Meranda’s subsequent election as Speaker.
Over 90% of lawmakers had accused Obasa of poor leadership, lateness to legislative sessions, high-handedness, and alleged financial misconduct.
To resolve the crisis, top All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders—including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode—held a series of meetings last weekend under the directive of President Bola Tinubu. Following these discussions, it was suggested that both Obasa and Meranda may step down for another lawmaker to assume leadership.
Chief Muraina Taiwo, a member of the Governors Advisory Council, disclosed that one of the seven lawmakers from Lagos West is being considered for the position.
Obviously, with Obasa making a bold move to reclaim power, the battle for the Assembly’s leadership is far from over.
