Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shared a story about how he once dismissed his daughter from work on his farm for arriving late.
According to him, the decision sent a strong message about discipline and leadership, showing that no one was above the rules.
Obasanjo spoke about this experience when he received Dr. Dayo Israel, the new Chairman of the Board of Management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta. Dr. Israel, along with FMC’s Medical Director, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, and other officials, paid the former president a courtesy visit at his Penthouse residence in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.
During their conversation, Obasanjo advised Dr. Israel to be firm in his new role and not shy away from making difficult decisions. He emphasized that true leaders often have to “step on toes” to be effective.
Recalling the incident with his daughter, Obasanjo explained that after leaving office as Head of State, his daughter, who was then studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, came to work on his farm for practical experience during her school break.
On her first day, she arrived at 7:15 a.m. instead of the scheduled 7:00 a.m. Obasanjo warned her about the importance of punctuality, reminding her that, as his daughter, she needed to set a good example for other workers. However, the following day, she was late again. Without hesitation, Obasanjo sent her back home right from the gate.
His firm action had an immediate impact on the rest of the employees. They realized that if Obasanjo could discipline his own daughter, then no one was above the rules.
Speaking further, Obasanjo stressed that leaders must be bold and ready to make tough decisions. He pointed out that any leader who avoids stepping on toes is unlikely to be effective.
Dr. Israel, who was clearly inspired by the visit, described Obasanjo as a man full of wisdom and experience. He expressed appreciation for the advice and said that it would help guide him as he takes on the challenge of improving FMC Abeokuta.
Obasanjo’s story highlights the importance of discipline, fairness, and leading by example, even when it means making unpopular decisions.
