Borussia Dortmund has officially parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahinafter a tough 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League. The decision dropped on Wednesday, with the club’s brass saying they’ve “lost faith” in the young manager.
Just last season, Sahin was riding high as assistant coach, helping Dortmund reach a surprise Champions League final (where they lost to Real Madrid). This summer, he got the top job, but the magic didn’t follow.
Now, with four straight losses in all competitions and a 10th-place Bundesliga ranking (a massive 20 points behind Bayern Munich), Dortmund decided it was time to hit reset.
Sporting CEO Lars Ricken didn’t mince words: “We’ve lost faith that we’ll hit our goals with Sahin in charge. This decision hurts, but it was unavoidable after the Bologna game.”
They wanted a long-term partnership with Sahin, but the results just didn’t back it up. Fair? Tough? Maybe both.
Dortmund hasn’t announced a replacement yet, but the rumor mill’s already buzzing. Possible names include: Erik ten Hag (yep, the ex-Manchester United boss has been spotted watching Dortmund games) and Roger Schmidt, the former manager of Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen.
Whoever steps in will have to hit the ground running, with Dortmund hosting Werder Bremen this weekend.
Sahin took the news like a champ, admitting, “I couldn’t live up to Dortmund’s ambitions right now. I wish this special club all the best.
Even after the Bologna loss, he told reporters: “If I’m the problem and a coaching change solves things, then so be it.”
Under Sahin, Dortmund’s away form was rough. Out of 15 away games, they only managed 4 wins (while losing 9). To make matters worse, they got knocked out of the German Cup in the last 32 by Wolfsburg.
It’s been a rocky ride, but the Nuri Sahin chapter at Dortmund is officially closed. Now it’s up to the next coach to steady the ship.
Can Dortmund bounce back from this slump? Time will tell. For now, Sahin’s exit marks the end of a short and stormy stint.
Stay tuned, footy fans – the Dortmund drama’s not done yet!
