Tragic Stampede at Maitama Church Claims 10 Lives: FCT Police Issue New Safety Directives

A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday, December 21, 2024, when a stampede during a food distribution event claimed the lives of 10 individuals, including four children. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 AM, also left eight others injured.

According to the FCT Police Command, the stampede happened during a charity outreach aimed at providing food items to the vulnerable and elderly. The large crowd, numbering over 1,000 people, overwhelmed the organizers, leading to the unfortunate loss of life and injuries.

Police reports confirm that four of the injured have been treated and discharged, while the remaining victims are still receiving medical care. The FCT Police Rapid Response Squad and the FCT Joint Task Force were able to restore order and evacuate the crowd.

In a show of support, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, visited the injured victims at the hospital to offer assistance and reassurance. Extending condolences to the bereaved families, the Police Command emphasized the importance of preventing similar incidents in the future.

To that end, the Command has mandated that all organizations, religious bodies, and individuals planning public events or large gatherings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) must notify the Police in advance. This measure will allow for adequate security arrangements to ensure public safety. Failure to comply will hold organizers liable for any resulting incidents or loss of life.

The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Abuja and urged the public to collaborate by adhering to these guidelines. For emergencies, the Police encouraged residents to use the FCT Control Room hotlines: 0803 200 3913 or 0806 032 1234.

SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, called on all citizens to support the Police in maintaining order and ensuring the safety of the FCT community.

This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of proper planning and crowd control during public events.
