Stampede at Oyo Children’s Funfair: Organisers Arrested, Says Makinde

The organisers of a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a tragic stampede occurred, have been arrested, Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed on Wednesday. The incident, which took place at Islamic High School, Basorun, led to the loss of several lives and left many injured.

Makinde, in a statement shared on his official X handle, expressed his condolences to the families affected and assured the public that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.
“This is a very sad day for us here in Oyo State,” the governor stated. “We sympathise with the parents whose joy has suddenly turned to mourning due to these deaths.”
He further revealed that immediate measures had been taken to restore order and prevent further casualties. Security agents were deployed to the venue, along with medical personnel and ambulances to provide emergency care.
The governor added that the event had been stopped, and attendees were safely escorted out of the premises. “We are taking all realistic measures to ensure the venue is secured,” he said.
While withholding the identities of the organisers, Makinde disclosed that they are in custody and will face appropriate consequences if found culpable.
“I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable,” he said. “Please remain calm as security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
Though the state government did not officially name the organisers, findings revealed that the funfair was a collaboration between Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Agidigbo 88.7 FM, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat.
The event was part of Queen Naomi’s initiative under her Women In Need Of Guidance and Support (WINGS) foundation. According to a social media announcement by Agidigbo FM, the funfair aimed to host 5,000 children aged 0-13 years across Ibadan, with promises of scholarships, prizes, and free participation.
Speaking ahead of the event, Queen Naomi had assured parents of adequate security for attendees. However, the tragic turn of events has cast a shadow over the initiative.
In the aftermath of the stampede, distraught parents were seen at hospitals across the city, desperately searching for their children. Many injured victims are receiving treatment, while the state government continues its investigation.
Governor Makinde has vowed to ensure accountability, emphasizing the need for safety and responsibility in future events.
