Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have captured a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, in Shinkafi town, Zamfara State.
Wurgi was reportedly behind the assassination of the Sarkin Gobir of Sabon Birni in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa. His arrest took place on December 14 at around 10 p.m., after intelligence revealed he was receiving treatment at a local hospital for injuries sustained during a clash with a rival group.
Wurgi had been hospitalized with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds, which allowed the troops to track him down. During the operation, two of his accomplices escaped, but another individual who helped transport Wurgi using a tricycle was arrested.
Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama confirmed the arrest on his X handle, revealing that Wurgi had a history of kidnapping, arms smuggling, and failed ransom negotiations. He reportedly demanded cash and motorcycles during these crimes.
Makama further disclosed Wurgi’s links to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, highlighting their shared family ties. Wurgi’s son, Sani Duna, is also believed to act as a getaway driver for Turji, demonstrating the deep connections within the criminal network.
In a tragic backstory, Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa and his son were kidnapped in July while traveling to Sabon Birni, Sokoto State. The kidnappers initially demanded N1 billion but later asked for N60 million and five motorcycles for the release of the traditional ruler’s body.
A chilling video later surfaced, showing the late Sarkin Gobir pleading for rescue. Speaking under duress, he recounted his harrowing experience in captivity. Tragically, despite his desperate appeals, he was killed by his captors.
This arrest marks a significant step in the fight against banditry in Nigeria, although it also sheds light on the widespread criminal networks threatening the country’s security.
