Uproar in Okuama as community leader dies in custody

The people of Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, where 17 officers and soldiers were killed early this year, has received the death of the President-General, Pa James Oghoroko, in military detention, with pains and feeling nostalgia.

This happened after the community, in different suit, including FHC/WR/CS/41/2024, FHC/WR/CS/42/2024, and FHC/WR/CS/42/2024, sought relieves at a Federal High Court in the state to secure his release and other detainees.

Oghoroko ranks high among the leaders that were arrested by the Nigerian military since August 2024 over the killings of their men.

Others in detention between August 18 and 20, 2024 include, Chief Belvis Adogbo Mrs Rita Akata, Dennis Okugbaye, Prof Arthur Ekpekpo and Pa Anthony Ahwemuria.

Late Oghoroko’s mother-in-law’s burial, is coming up this tomorrow (Saturday) but his wife, who is burying her mother, is yet to be told of his husband’s death.

Also, the Secretary-General of the community, Mr. Dennis Okugbaye, who is still in military custody, is said to be sick.

The leaders of the community broke the news of his demise, having summoned an emergency meeting yesterday.

It was also revealed that Pa Dennis Okugbaye, another community leader in the military detention, is sick.

Pandemonium immediately erupted in the community, as his kinsmen and other residents burst into mourning.

The youth wing of the community could not comprehend the tragedy as they swung into emergency meeting too.

Meanwhile the community’s Lead Counsel, Olorogun Allbert Akpomudje SAN said he will meet with the family members and his team to ascertain the next line of action.
