Senate Confirms Oluyede as Chief of Army Staff

The Senate has officially confirmed Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu.

The confirmation, announced during Tuesday’s plenary, came after a thorough review of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Army, chaired by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (APC, Katsina Central). The report detailed Oluyede’s screening, which took place on November 26 in his capacity as Acting Chief of Army Staff.
Yar’Adua described Oluyede as an exceptionally qualified officer who fulfilled all the necessary criteria for the position. The Senate unanimously endorsed the nomination, with every senator present voting in favour during deliberations in the Committee of the Whole.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed his confidence in Oluyede’s ability to tackle the nation’s escalating security challenges, including terrorism and banditry. He also extended condolences over the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Oluyede’s predecessor, and prayed for his eternal rest.
President Tinubu had formally requested the Senate’s confirmation of Oluyede last week, citing Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act. In his letter, Tinubu praised Oluyede’s exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication to national security.
Oluyede was initially appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, following the illness and subsequent death of Lagbaja. His confirmation marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to enhance Nigeria’s military leadership amid growing security concerns.
