South African singer Tyla made a stunning impact at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, UK, on Sunday, taking home three prestigious awards.
Tyla triumphed in the Best Afrobeats Artist category, beating out Nigerian stars like Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr. She also claimed the Best African Act award, surpassing competitors such as Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.
Her third win of the night was for Best R&B Artist, where she outshone American icons like Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét.
Tyla capped off her memorable evening with a captivating acoustic performance of her hit song “Water.”
On the other hand, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, who was nominated in four categories — Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push — left the event empty-handed.
Earlier this year, Tyla also made waves by defeating Nigerian artists to win the inaugural Best African Music Performance award at the Grammys. Additionally, she triumphed over Nigerian musicians in the Best Afrobeats Artist category at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards.
