Minister Promises Power Restoration to North Within 72 Hours

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured that electricity will be restored to Northern Nigeria within three days. Adelabu addressed the Senate on Tuesday, explaining efforts to resolve the outage that affected the North-East, North-West, and parts of North-Central Nigeria following the October 22 disruption.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that the 330-kilovolt Ugwaji-Apir transmission lines tripped, affecting power supply across the region. Additionally, the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, a major power source for the North, was reportedly vandalized by insurgents, according to Nafisatu Ali, Executive Director of the Independent System Operator.

In response, President Bola Tinubu has instructed the military to secure the area, enabling repair work on the affected lines. To alleviate the impact of the outage, Adelabu noted that power supply will be rerouted temporarily through the Ugwuaji-Makurdi line, which is expected to serve around 80% of the affected areas.

“Power will be restored to the North in two to three days. We will use the Ugwuaji-Makurdi transmission line for temporary purpose,” Adelabu said.

He further noted that efforts are underway to access the damaged grid with the assistance of security agencies.

Once fully accessible, the damaged lines will be repaired, allowing for a complete restoration of power to the affected areas.

Adelabu added, “We are working with security agencies to access the grid currently occupied by vandals.

“I assure you that within the next 14 days, the repairs will be completed, and power will be fully restored to the North.”
