Okada Riders Clash with Police Team, Kill Officer in Lagos

An Assistant Superintendent of Police with the Lagos State Police Command was killed by an irate mob in the Agege area of Lagos on Saturday morning. The officer, whose identity has not yet been revealed, had led a team to the scene of an accident at WEMCO junction, Mobil Road, where a truck had reportedly knocked down a commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider).

Upon their arrival, the police team faced resistance from the Okada riders, who insisted on setting the truck ablaze. Despite efforts to manage the situation, the mob attacked the police team, leading to the death of the officer.

Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, describing the killing as senseless and avoidable. Hundeyin explained that the team had responded to a distress call at about 1:40 a.m., involving a fatal accident in which an Okada rider collided with a trailer, resulting in his death.

He further revealed that five suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said, “On getting to the scene, the team met a large number of motorcycle riders who had gathered around the place. However, the patrol team, in the process of evacuating the truck, came under attack by the riders who insisted on torching the truck, as a result of which one ASP, 46 years old, was injured on the head and died on the spot while the truck driver escaped.

“Five suspects have since been arrested, and manhunt for others is on.”
