Modrić Breaks Puskás’ Record as Oldest Real Madrid Player

Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić made history today by becoming the oldest player to ever feature in an official match for Real Madrid, surpassing a 57-year-old record previously held by Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás. Modrić, aged 39 years and 40 days, appeared in Real Madrid’s 2-1 La Liga win against Celta Vigo, breaking Puskás’ record of 39 years and 38 days set in May 1966.

The former Ballon d’Or winner, who joined Real Madrid in 2012, continues to defy expectations with his ageless performances. In today’s match, Modrić entered as a substitute in the 63rd minute, replacing Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde. Just three minutes after coming on, he provided a key assist for Vinícius Júnior’s goal in the 66th minute, helping Madrid retake the lead after Williot Swedberg had equalized following Kylian Mbappé’s early strike.

Modrić’s stellar career includes five UEFA Champions League titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, and the 2018 Ballon d’Or. His leadership, vision, and precision remain crucial to Real Madrid’s success under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

After the game, Modrić expressed his gratitude: “It’s an incredible honor to break this record at such a historic club. I’ve worked hard to maintain my fitness and passion for the game, and to still be able to contribute to the team means everything to me.”

The Santiago Bernabéu faithful gave Modrić a standing ovation, recognizing his legendary status at the club. His historic achievement adds another chapter to an already glittering career, as he continues to play a vital role in Real Madrid’s quest for silverware this season.
