At least 10 passengers, including three children, lost their lives in a tragic accident on Wednesday involving a bus and a stationary truck at Abule-Osun, heading towards Iyana-Iba, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
Three survivors are currently receiving treatment in the hospital after being rushed from the crash scene.
The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. when a Toyota Sienna bus, with registration number BDG 342 FS, fully loaded with passengers from the eastern region of the country, collided with a stationary SHACMAN truck loaded with granite, which had no visible registration number.
According to an eyewitness, Anthony Ogah, the accident happened at Abule Osun, inward Iyana Iba, along the expressway. The Toyota Sienna, reportedly speeding, crashed into the parked truck, which had been obstructing about half of the road.
Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident, attributing the crash to excessive speeding.
Investigations revealed that the truck had been parked in a dangerous position, blocking part of the road, leading to the bus colliding with it from behind.
“Tragically, 10 passengers died in the accident, and three were critically injured,” Oke-Osanyitolu said.
The casualties included three men, four women, two female children, and one male child. Sadly, one of the two initial surviving female adults later succumbed to her injuries.
However, two children and one female adult were fortunate to survive after receiving immediate medical care from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) at the scene. They were later transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for further treatment.
Emergency responders from LASEMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were on the scene to rescue the injured passengers.
