Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has emphasized that the security of the people remains a top priority for his administration, reaffirming his dedication to making decisions that prioritize the welfare of Oyo State residents.
During a state broadcast on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, to celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Governor Makinde highlighted the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and fostering unity among Nigerians.
In his address, Makinde noted, “My good people of Oyo State, today we celebrate 64 years of Nigeria’s independence—a journey marked by moments of pride and reflection. We have walked, crawled, run, stumbled, and risen again, demonstrating an unwavering resilience that defines us as a nation.”
The governor reflected on the progress made in Oyo State, attributing the strides in development to the support of the people over the last five years.
“Here in Oyo State, we have exemplified that same resilience, moving from accelerated development to sustainable development, with a focus on lifting our people from poverty to prosperity,” he said.
As the country faces economic challenges, the governor urged the people to remain hopeful, stating, “They say the darkest hour comes just before dawn. As we navigate these difficult economic times, we must remember our resilient spirit. Rest assured, the sun will rise.”
Governor Makinde took the opportunity to unveil new initiatives aimed at boosting economic recovery and supporting local businesses.
He announced that the state government had expanded the guarantor base for small-scale loans available to agricpreneurs through the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State, further empowering the agricultural sector and fostering economic growth.
“Guarantors will no longer be limited to civil servants but will now include community development associations, farmers’ associations, and artisans’ associations,” he said.
The governor also extended the subsidy on transportation for another six months under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery Scheme.
“The subsidy will now include support for trucks to aid produce evacuation, implemented through various trader and agriculture units,” he added.
Makinde further emphasized the importance of unity, saying, “Now is not the time to focus on what divides us. We must hold fast to the things that unite us—our shared identity, culture, and history. Let us remember who the real enemies are so we do not turn against our friends.”
On security, the governor reassured residents of the government’s continued efforts to ensure their safety.
“During your celebrations, you may notice an increased security presence. Do not be alarmed—they are there to ensure your safety and guarantee a peaceful celebration,” he stated.
