The Edo State Police Command announced on Monday that Professor Monday Igbafe, the Benin Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has escaped from his captors.
Igbafe was kidnapped on Saturday night while driving into his residence in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area. His abductors reportedly took him to an unknown location in his Toyota Highlander, with registration number ABJ 180 JQ.
Earlier, Dr. Onogbosele, Chairman of the ASUU Ambrose Ali University chapter, had stated that Igbafe’s whereabouts were unknown, as the kidnappers had not yet contacted his family or colleagues.
He added: “It’s true that ASUU Benin Zonal coordinator, Prof. Igbafen, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Saturday night. The kidnappers are yet to call. We don’t know their demands.”
However, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, SP Joel Yamu, when contacted, said the Command is aware of the kidnap but that the victim escaped from his abductors, adding that the police are after the suspects.
He said, “The Command is aware of the report. Operatives of the Ekpoma Division mounted pressure on the kidnappers, which led to the escape of the victim. We are on the trail of the suspects to ensure they are brought to book, please.”
