Tragedy struck a family in Agu-Uwani, Akwuke community in Enugu South local government area of Enugu State when three siblings from the same family died after consuming suspected poisonous beans.
The beans were purchased from Garriki Market, leading many residents to avoid beans and related food items.
The deceased children were the offspring of Mr. Callistus Egbo, the owner of Elohim Primary and Secondary School in Agu-Uwani. They fell ill after consuming the beans on Tuesday evening and one child passed away that evening, while the other two died the following day.
A video circulating on various WhatsApp chat groups showed the critically ill father, Callistus Egbo, at a private hospital in Enugu.
While there is no official medical report confirming the cause of deaths, it is widely suspected to be food poisoning from the contaminated beans.
This tragic incident has caused alarm in the community, raising concerns about food safety, proper food handling, and inspection.
Following the tragedy, many people in the area have stopped consuming beans and bean-related foods such as Akara and Moi Moi.
The community is hoping for the father’s recovery, as his wife was reportedly away at the time of the meal and they wish for the souls of the departed children to rest in peace.
Neither the police nor the state government has issued an official statement on the incident.
