Ismaila Atus, the Managing Director of Woskybet, has expressed concern that multiple taxations from both the state and federal governments are stifling businesses across the country, particularly in the betting industry.
In a statement made on Monday ahead of the official launch of Woskybet in Abuja on October 4, Atus lamented the high taxes imposed on businesses, stating that betting firms are being taxed exorbitantly.
He also highlighted that betting has provided many Nigerians with opportunities to earn significant incomes and has created employment for many.
He said, “The multiple taxations from the state governments and federal government are suffocating businesses in the country coupled with the fact that the economy is struggling.
“The government is looking at it from the perspective of the population and they know that people are out there to make money desperately.
“You too as a company are desperate to make money, and that is the fake life we live in this country. The government taxes the company and the company, in turn, puts all the taxes on the subscribers. The regulations are not effective.
“At the moment we have created about 100 employees. And because it is a large work, we have to manage people’s wallets.
“Also, you need to have a department for operation that manages gains. We have a lot of staff members that we have employed.”
Atus also welcomed the Supreme Court ruling which empowered states with betting companies to issue licenses.
He added, “It is not about the National Lottery Commission again. We have in Lagos, Cross River, Imo, Oyo States that give licenses. All you have to do is to upgrade the system. For you to obtain a license, it shows that you have passed the test.”
