The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Tahiru Hamidu, for allegedly sexually assaulting a mentally unstable married woman in the Owode community, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. According to the state police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the suspect was apprehended by the Owode Egba Division on September 12, 2024, after being accused of repeatedly exploiting the victim’s condition.
Reports suggest that Hamidu not only engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse with the woman on multiple occasions but also threatened her brother-in-law, Shofolahan, with murder if he did not allow the continued abuse. In one instance, the suspect allegedly lured the survivor to a cassava plantation, where he raped her multiple times before releasing her.
Odutola said, “The survivor is mentally incapacitated. The brother-in-law who reported the case claims that the suspect threatened to kill him to prevent him from stopping the crimes. The suspect is accused of repeatedly engaging in sexual acts with the survivor.
“The suspect is also accused of luring the survivor to a cassava plantation in the community, where he allegedly engaged in non-consensual sexual intercourse with her repeatedly.
“He began threatening the brother-in-law, warning him to stop preventing him from having sexual intercourse with the survivor and demanding that he hand her over to him.”
Odutola further confirmed that the investigation into the crime is ongoing following Tahiru Hamidu’s arrest.
In a similar case reported in March 2024, a 26-year-old man, Usman Bube, was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his pregnant neighbor’s wife in the Ogatalo Fulani Camp in the Imala area of Ogun State. According to reports, Bube broke into his neighbor’s apartment, targeting the pregnant woman while her husband, Muhammed Awwalu, was away.
The suspect’s attempt to forcibly engage in unlawful sexual intercourse was unsuccessful, and he allegedly resorted to using a knife in an attempt to silence and overpower the woman. However, he was apprehended by neighbors before he could complete the assault.
