CNN Poll: 63% Viewers Say Kamala Harris Won Presidential Debate Over Donald Trump

The first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump erupted into a heated 90-minute exchange, with both candidates fiercely defending their policies.

Harris, kicking off the debate with a handshake, quickly shifted to a combative stance, sharply attacking Trump’s record.

A post-debate poll conducted by CNN and SSRS revealed that 63% of viewers believed Harris outperformed Trump, while 37% sided with the former president. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 5.3%, but it showed a clear tilt in Harris’ favor. Prior to the debate, a CNN poll indicated an even 50-50 split in terms of expectations for the winner.

Harris took the offensive early, denouncing Trump’s past policies and framing her candidacy as a “new generation of leadership.” She repeatedly accused Trump of clinging to a “tired playbook” of falsehoods and divisiveness, bringing up his rallies and legal troubles, including his multiple indictments. Trump countered by targeting Harris and President Joe Biden, focusing on their administration’s handling of issues like Afghanistan and immigration. He sought to tether Harris’ candidacy to Biden’s presidency, often repeating the phrase, “She is Biden.”

The debate underscored the stark divide between the two candidates, with Harris portraying herself as a forward-thinking leader and Trump doubling down on his previous policies. Despite the fiery exchanges, neither candidate addressed Harris’ gender, though Trump briefly referenced her racial identity, continuing a pattern of inaccurate claims.

Key moments included Harris calling Trump “fired by 81 million people” and Trump interrupting Harris with, “Wait a minute, I’m talking now, if you don’t mind.”

Harris’ campaign quickly seized the moment, calling for a second debate and asserting that voters had been presented with a clear choice between “moving forward with Kamala Harris or going backward with Trump.” Trump dismissed the call for another debate, telling ABC News that Harris only wanted a rematch because she “lost very badly.”

With Election Day just weeks away, the debate has set the tone for an intense campaign season as polls show the race between Harris and Trump tightening.
