65yrs old man, 2 children, mentally sick teenager saved from suicide

A 65- year- old man ,Ewenla Ibrahim Adetomiwa, who attempted to end his life by jumping into the lagoon has been rescued.

This is just an 18- year old teenager was also stopped from jumping into the lagoon through the same Third Mainland bridge by the police.

The victim had reportedly gone to the Third Mainland bridge in the company of his two children ,aged 16 years and 12 years to commit the crime ,when he was rescued.

The Ikorodu resident however claimed that he took the children with him so that the government can take care of them after his death.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Benjamin Hundeyin in a statement yesterday said on September 4, 2024, at about 2:30pm, that a distress call was received that a man with his two children attempted to commit suicide by trying to jump into the lagoon at the end of the Third Mainland bridge.

Hundeyin said he was prevented by a Good Samaritan ,who alerted the police through the Control Room.

“On the receipt of the information, a team of policemen went to the scene ,where the victim,Ewenla Ibrahim Adetomiwa ,a blind man ,aged 65 of Ikorodu Lagos and his two children were seen on the Third Mainland bridge in the midst of crowd.

They were rescued to the station  and upon interrogation ,the man admitted  that is intention was to commit suicide to enable the government to take charge of his children.”

The police Spokesperson also stated that effort was on to contact his wife and family members of the victims.

In another related development ,an 18- year  old mentally sick resident of 1004 estate was also prevented from jumping into the the lagoon through the same Third Mainland bridge.

Hundeyin stated that the victim was rescued by operatives of Yaba Police station ,who were on routine patrol in the area.

He added that his family had been contacted and that he had been handed over to them  for immediate treatment.
