Gunmen have attacked a police station in Oba, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, marking the third such incident in recent weeks. Previous attacks occurred in Nnewi and Nnobi in August, resulting in the deaths of several officers.
In the early morning assault, a police corporal, whose identity has not been disclosed, was killed. The attackers, suspected separatists, threw petrol bombs into the station, setting parts of the building and the nearby Oba Civic Center on fire.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack, stating that the assailants fired sporadically and used petrol bombs, causing significant damage. The fire was eventually extinguished by responding officers and the joint security team.
Anambra’s police forces, along with the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other agencies, have launched a coordinated operation in Oba and surrounding areas. Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, condemned the attack as an invasion and an assault on the nation’s security, pledging to hold those responsible accountable.
