Okpara blasts NFF over Labbadia, says lack of structure scares good coaches away

Ex-international, Godwin Okpara, has berated the Nigeria Football Federation for naming an unknown tactician as the new coach of the Super Eagles despite claiming they stayed long to get a new coach because of the plans to get one of the best for the team.

The federation in the early hours of Tuesday announced that it had reached an agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, to become the Eagles coach.
Reacting to the news, the former PSG of France star said he was surprised especially the quality of the coach announced.

“I’m so surprised. I don’t know why we do things at the last minute. We have all this time to do what we’re supposed to do. At the end of the day, what will happen now, if we don’t get that result?” he said.

“Despite the delay, imagine who they are bringing as the coach, instead of bringing somebody that has a pedigree, you know, that the players will respect, you’re bringing in somebody that doesn’t have a job for how many years, that doesn’t coach. So tell me, what experience? How do you want the players to respect this person?

“If the players cannot respect someone like Finidi George with all his achievements, how are they going to respect the new one that you’re bringing? No record.”

Speaking further, Okpara said most coaches are running away from handling the Super Eagles job because of a lack of structures on the part of the NFF.

He added: “The way we handle things is different from other people. Only Nigeria, even Benin Republic are more professional than us.”
