Police Summon NLC President Joe Ajaero Over Terrorism Financing Allegations

The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning over serious allegations, including terrorism financing, treasonable felony, and cybercrime.

The invitation, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, explicitly warns Ajaero that failure to comply will result in a warrant for his arrest. The letter states, “This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime in which you have been implicated.”

Ajaero has been instructed to report for questioning at the police headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 AM sharp. The letter further cautions, “If you fail to honour this letter, this office will have no choice but to issue a warrant for your arrest.”

As of now, Joe Ajaero has not responded publicly to the police summons. However, this development comes amid rising tensions between the NLC and the government. Recently, the NLC accused the government of orchestrating a crackdown on the organization, following a controversial raid on its headquarters by security forces.

In a fiery press conference held last Thursday, NLC leaders blasted the police’s justification for the raid, demanding an apology, the return of confiscated items, and the release of detained members. The NLC also decried what it described as government attempts to meddle in its affairs, particularly through proposed changes to trade union leadership tenure, which the union says violate both national and international labor laws.

The police, for their part, have claimed that the raid w0as part of an operation to capture an international terrorist suspect. The NLC, however, has dismissed this explanation as a smokescreen, pointing out inconsistencies in the police’s account of events.

This confrontation between the NLC and the Nigerian government appears to be escalating rapidly, with potentially significant implications for labor relations and civil rights in the country. The coming days will reveal whether this standoff will lead to further unrest or if a resolution can be found through dialogue.l
