NLC Engages Forensic Experts to Sweep Secretariat After Police Raid

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has enlisted the help of forensic experts to thoroughly inspect its national secretariat in Abuja for any surveillance devices that may have been planted during a recent police raid.

The forensic security audit aims to ensure the safety of NLC staff before they resume work at the offices, which were raided on July 7 by security agents.

According to NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, the raid occurred around 8:30 p.m., when officers, including some in black T-shirts likely from the Department of State Services, and others in plain clothes, entered the building, detained security personnel, and seized keys to offices on the second floor.

The police later claimed responsibility for the raid, stating that it was part of an operation to find incriminating documents linked to an international figure deemed a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

However, the NLC has dismissed the police’s explanation, demanding the release of arrested members and the return of seized documents.

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, NLC’s National Assistant General Secretary, Chris Onyeka, confirmed that the union has hired international experts to conduct a forensic security audit. “The NLC, during its National Executive Council meeting, decided that a thorough security check was necessary to ensure no surveillance devices were planted and that the staff could safely return to work,” Onyeka stated.

Onyeka also emphasized that the NLC expects an apology from the Federal Government and the police, which has yet to be issued.
