The newly installed president of the Rotary Club of Akoka, Dr Doyin Ogunyemi, has unveiled plans to execute projects worth over N15 million during the 2024/2025 rotary year.
Speaking at the club’s investiture and fundraising ceremony held in Lagos over the weekend, Ogunyemi said among the key projects she intends to execute are the renovation of sanitary area of Okobaba Destitute Community in Ebute Metta.
Ogunyemi said project will serve a community with lepers, blind and cripple. She said the community has an overhead tank that doesn’t function and fixing will reduce diseases like cholera.
She said the club will also provide necessary equipment and upliftment of Oba Salami Healthcare Centre and the Iwaya Primary Healthcare Centre.
Ogunyemi said: “One of the main projects and the one that would probably take the buck is our proposed project to renovate sanitary area of Okobaba Destitute Community in Ebute Metta.
“It has destitute mostly lepers and those who are blind and some who are crippled. I visited them last year and there are so much that can be done in the community because it is really deplorable.
“The best we can do for those who cannot help themselves and this is one community where our impact can be felt.
“They have an overhead tank that doesn’t function and when there is lack of water, diseases like cholera spread very easily.
“For this project we are happy to partner with corporate organizations to see it come alive. It costs N8.5 million.
“We are choosing two primary healthcare centres within our Akoka vicinity, the Oba Salami Healthcare Centre and the Iwaya Primary Healthcare Centre.
“These are places we have done needs assessment and we see the need for upliftment. And servicing these healthcare centres will go a long way in touching lives and promoting health.
“The next one is to offer workshops and trainings sections focused on conflict resolutions. There are so much we can among young people to begin to channel their energy from doing nothing to doing something.
“We are also investing in basic education and literacy. Some of the problems we have seen in schools is that some students are indigents and they are not able to have proper school uniforms or even school bags.
“And these things impact on their performance in school one way or the other because they feel they are not satisfied. So we have picked two schools in Itire and Mushin. We are going to be providing school uniforms for 60 students in these schools.
“We will be donating sanitary pads to 100 school girls in Ojodu area. And to the school where we are doing these donations, we would be providing 3-1 printer for the school’s administrative office.
“Finally, within our environment we are going to promote safety by installing safety signs within our premises and Akoka area.”
Ogunyemi said the club is open to partnership with the government and corporate organizations in achieving its target.
“I recognize the importance of collaboration with other Rotary clubs and corporate organizations and we will work to strengthen this relationships so that we can maximize our impact and reach,” she said.
