Nigeria’s Supersand Eagles pulled off a remarkable 5-4 victory against hosts Mauritania in a Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Saturday.
The team, led by Coach Abdullahi Isa, is set to return to the country by midnight on Tuesday.
In their first international game in five years, the Supersand Eagles showed great resilience, coming from behind to secure a thrilling win in Nouakchott. Emeka Ogbonna opened the scoring just two minutes and 14 seconds into the game, setting the tone for Nigeria’s victory. Emmanuel Ohwoferia then doubled the lead 36 seconds later, putting the team in a strong position. However, the hosts managed to reduce the deficit, ending the first period with a score of 2-1 in Nigeria’s favor.
Mauritania seized the lead in the second period with two quick goals, but Victor Tale equalized for Nigeria. The hosts once again took the lead early in the third period, only for Nigeria to stage a comeback with goals from Taiwo Adams and Tale, securing the win and building momentum for the return leg.
The return leg is scheduled to take place at the Murtala Muhammed Square in Kaduna on Saturday afternoon.
