Four people were rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed two-storey building beside Cupid Hotel on Sultan Dansuki Road, Phase 2, Site 2, in Kubwa satellite town, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday.
The building, previously used as a hotel before being converted into a residential space with 45 self-contained rooms, collapsed, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Officials from the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the FCT Fire Service (FFS), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) were on the scene, working to rescue other occupants trapped under the debris.
FEMD Acting Director General, Mrs. Florence Dawon Wenegieme, stated that the agency was alerted by passersby and also received a distress call on the 112 emergency toll-free number at around 6:45 am.
Wenegieme affirmed that search and rescue efforts would continue until every person is accounted for. She urged developers to adhere strictly to building codes and avoid using substandard materials.
Two of the rescued victims have been taken to Kubwa General Hospital, and efforts are ongoing to locate any other individuals who may still be trapped under the rubble.
