Tinubu Applauds Supreme Court Verdict on LG Financial Autonomy

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s decision on Thursday affirming the constitutional rights of local governments. In a statement released by his media adviser, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President expressed his approval of the court’s affirmation, emphasizing that ineffective local government administration has been a fundamental challenge to Nigeria’s progress. He noted that governance at the grassroots level, a critical component of the socio-political structure, has often been lacking.

President Tinubu stressed that the responsibility now lies with local government leaders to ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots level receive tangible benefits from people-oriented service delivery.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about the people of this country, at all levels, irrespective of faith, tribe, gender, political affiliation, or any other artificial line they say exists between us. This country belongs to all of us. By virtue of this judgment, our people – especially the poor – will be able to hold their local leaders to account for their actions and inactions. What is sent to local government accounts will be known, and services must now be provided without excuses.

“My administration instituted this suit because of our unwavering belief that our people must have relief and today’s judgement will ensure that it will be only those local officials elected by the people that will control the resources of the people. This judgement stands as a resounding affirmation that we can use legitimate means of redress to restructure our country and restructure our economy to make Nigeria a better place to live in and a fairer society for all of our people,” President Tinubu stated.

President Tinubu emphasized that the provision of essential amenities and public goods such as roads, street lighting, drains, parks, and community security has suffered due to the weakening of local governments.

He underscored the historic significance of the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the constitutional rights and financial autonomy of local governments, which he believes reinforces Nigeria’s federal structure. This, he said, is crucial for the nation’s overall development.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his diligent and patriotic efforts in this regard.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the principles that guide citizens, government institutions, and various tiers of governance. This commitment, he stated, aims to foster an efficient and performance-driven governance system that benefits all Nigerians.
