Bolivia: General Zúñiga Arrested Following Coup Attempt

Bolivian police have arrested General Juan José Zúñiga following a failed coup attempt on Wednesday.

Zúñiga, who commanded the country’s army, led armed soldiers in an assault on the presidential palace in La Paz. He was apprehended outside a military barracks and taken to the prosecutor’s office.

According to Reuters, the chief prosecutor’s office will launch a criminal investigation against Zúñiga and other participants in the attempted coup.

Bolivian President Luis Arce gave a televised statement to denounce the attempted coup.

Arce also warned of “irregular military mobilizations”.

“Today the country once again faces interests so that democracy in Bolivia is truncated.

“We need Bolivian people to organize and mobilize against the coup,” Arce said.
