BREAKING: Tinubu presides over first FEC meeting in six weeks

President Bola Tinubu is presiding over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting today, Tuesday, June 25, marking the council’s first session in six weeks.

The last FEC meeting, held on May 13 and 14, dealt with a substantial number of memoranda over two consecutive days, addressing various critical state issues. During that meeting, over 20 memoranda were considered and approved, including a new government initiative focused on stimulating economic growth through investment in housing and infrastructure projects.

Today’s meeting sees the attendance of nearly all cabinet members, with notable exceptions being Vice President Kashim Shettima and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, who were absent at the start of the session.

Key attendees include Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, the President’s Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Head of Service Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris previously stated on October 16, 2023, that the council would convene only when there were significant memoranda to consider.

Idris said: “The president has approved that the Federal Executive Council meeting will now be happening on Mondays as against the traditional Wednesdays that we are used to.

“So FEC meetings have been moved to Mondays. Of course that does not mean that it has to happen every week. If there are no issues to discuss, it will be skipped to next week”, he had said.

Today’s meeting comes amid soaring inflation, an unresolved national minimum wage issue, and other socio-economic challenges.
