Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has praised the late Towulade of Akinale, Oba Femi Ogunleye, as a distinguished leader whose life was marked by significant achievements that elevated his community on a global scale.
Oba Femi Ogunleye, renowned as one of Nigeria’s foremost journalists, passed away in the United Kingdom at the age of 79.
In his condolence message to the Ogun State Council of Obas and the Akinale community, Governor Abiodun highlighted the late monarch’s remarkable contributions to the development of Ogun State. He acknowledged Oba Ogunleye’s illustrious career in journalism, emphasizing that he continued to serve his community diligently even after ascending the throne.
“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Oba Femi Ogunleye, a revered journalist and traditional ruler who passed away in London on Wednesday at the age of 79.
“Oba Ogunleye was a titan in the media industry, known for his unwavering commitment to journalism and his quest for truth and accountability. As the Towulade of Akinale, he was a respected monarch who worked tirelessly to uplift his people and foster development in Ogun State.
“His distinguished career and selfless service have left an indelible mark on our society. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Ogun State Council of Obas, his family, friends, and the entire Akinale community.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire future generations,” the statement said.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, through his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, expressed deep shock upon learning of the passing of the monarch, Oba Femi Ogunleye. Obasanjo, currently in South Africa for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration, recalled his recent conversation with Oba Ogunleye, where the monarch had shared his travel plans with him in good spirits.
Obasanjo highlighted that Oba Ogunleye’s absence would be profoundly felt not just in Owu and Ogun State but across Nigeria, underscoring the monarch’s significant influence and contributions.
Similarly, Senator Ibikunle Amosun described Oba Ogunleye as a leader of unwavering commitment and passion towards the development of Akinale, Owu Kingdom, Egbaland, and Ogun State.
He emphasized Oba Ogunleye’s pivotal role as the 1st Towulade of Akinale since his coronation in 2006, noting the monarch’s proactive efforts in fostering positive developments and promoting peace and unity among the people.
