NFF removes Finidi as Eagles head coach, announces plan to appoint expatriate

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the decision to appoint a foreign coach for the Super Eagles as the efforts are intensified to rescue the country’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The NFF which announced in a communique issued at the end of its emergency yesterday, said the coach will be appointed in the coming days.

“The Executive Committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches,” the communique read.
The decision means the current handler Finidi George has lost his place after just two matches in charge.

The NFF’s decision came after it got a green light from the Minister of Sports, John Enoh at an emergency meeting in the Minister’s office yesterday.

Nigeria’s World Cup chances have been thrown into jeopardy after the Eagles managed just three points from their first four matches. They are sitting second from the bottom of Group C with only the section winner guaranteed the ticket.

Meanwhile, a former Cameroon coach, Antonio Conceicao, is said to be the top contender for the post.

As part of the decisions reached at the emergency meeting, the NFF ‘resolved to beef up the NFF Technical Department with more qualitative hands. Equally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will be re-jigged with immediate effect.’
