Police Rescue American Citizen from Jumping into Lagos Lagoon

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have successfully rescued an American citizen from attempting suicide on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The incident, which took place on Monday, June 11, was disclosed by the RRS in a post shared on its X page. According to the report, the American citizen, whose name has been withheld, was brought to the bridge by his yet-to-be-identified baby mama, accompanied by his daughter.

In his early 30s, the man was about to leap into the lagoon when a passerby noticed his suspicious movements and promptly alerted patrolling police operatives. The officers swiftly intervened and persuaded the man not to jump.

The RRS post reads: “An American citizen, name withheld, was at 1:23 p.m. today restrained from committing suicide on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos. The American, who is in his early 30s, was driven to the Third Mainland Bridge by his baby mama in the company of his daughter. He directed the lady, who was unaware of his motive, to park somewhere while he walked to a spot for a leap into the lagoon.”

It continued: “A passerby who observed his movement quickly alerted patrolling RRS operatives who persuaded him from jumping.”

The RRS Commander, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, upon advising the man and his family, directed that the case be transferred to the Gender Department of the Lagos Police Command for further counselling and necessary actions.

This timely intervention by the RRS underscores the critical role of vigilant citizens and responsive law enforcement in preventing tragedies.
