Nigerian Anthem Coauthor Dr. Sota Omoigui Urges Leaders: 'Change Your Ways, Not the Anthem'

By Dr. Sota Omoigui MD, Coauthor of the Nigerian National Anthem

When I wrote the words for the Nigerian anthem in 1978, I envisioned a country progressing towards greatness. Unfortunately, our potential has been undermined by a corrupt political leadership, leading many to question our readiness for independence.
Reverting to the colonial anthem is a betrayal of our independence. It signifies a leadership that has lost its way, returning to its colonial master for guidance. The claim that the colonial anthem embodies more relevant values is hypocritical. The Nigerian anthem, with its call to action and patriotism, was written by Nigerians for Nigerians. Our leaders’ failure to embody these values is evident in their greed and corruption.
Analyzing the colonial anthem, it was appropriate for its time but is now outdated. Forcing Nigerians to sing “Nigeria, we hail thee” in the face of high unemployment, poor wages, lack of basic services, and widespread corruption is absurd. The country suffers from a 53% youth unemployment rate, dire living conditions, and rampant poverty, while leaders loot resources and fail to provide essential services.
Our political class has failed to uphold justice, peace, and unity. The national assembly is filled with corrupt individuals who plunder the nation’s wealth. Despite lofty promises, Nigerians live in worsening conditions compared to the time of independence.
To our leaders, it is clear you cannot uphold the ideals of either the Nigerian or colonial anthem. Change your ways, not the anthem.
If a new anthem must be chosen, it should reflect the reality of our current leadership:
**Oh Nigeria Oh Nigeria**

Our haven of delight

From the swamps of the Delta to the hills of Somorika

In cunning we excel

Our hands may grasp, our pockets to fill

In secret deals we find our thrill

Let no one see our secret ways

In darkness we shall stay

With every lie and every bribe, and every loot we share

We seize another day
Nigerians, arise and resist this modern-day slavery. Resist singing the colonial anthem. Only looters and corrupt politicians should sing “Nigeria we hail thee.” If you do not belong to these categories and you sing it, you are a liar.
God bless Nigeria. Arise, O Compatriots! Nigeria’s call obey!
