Nigeria started the game strongly, controlling play and dominating possession, while Benin opted to sit back and counter-attack. Nigeria created better chances, with Ademola Lookman coming close midway through the first half, but he couldn’t find the target.
The Super Eagles eventually broke through in the 27th minute when Samuel Chukwueze received a long pass on the right, cut inside, and passed to Raphael Onyedika, who struck the ball into the left corner of Benin’s goal.
However, the lead was short-lived. Jodel Dossou took advantage of poor defending to equalize for Benin in the 37th minute. Just before the break, Benin scored again due to another defensive lapse from Nigeria. A poorly defended corner fell to Steve Mounie, who finished confidently to make it 2-1.
