Man City's Premier League Title Race Permutations: What's Needed to Beat Arsenal, Win Championship

For the third time under Pep Guardiola and the fifth time overall, Manchester City head into the final day of the Premier League season with the title still up for grabs.

Arsenal’s narrow victory over Manchester United  ensured City could not win a record fourth consecutive top-flight crown until matchday 38.

Guardiola’s men were not at their best but got the job done with a tense 2-0 win in their game in hand at Tottenham on Tuesday.

It means City are back on top heading into Sunday, when themselves and Arsenal have the benefit of playing in front of their home fans against teams with relatively little left at stake.

No team in Premier League history has gone into a final-day showdown in the lead and ended it without the trophy in their grasp.  Are City likely to keep that run going? The Sporting News runs through the permutations below.

How can Man City win Premier League?

With one match left to play in their 2023/24 Premier League campaign, the title is City’s to lose.

Erling Haaland’s second-half brace and some heroics from substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega  gave City a 2-0 win at Tottenham on Tuesday and a two-point advantage heading into the season’s final game.

Arsenal had started the week on top thanks to their 1-0 win over Manchester United .

What do Man City need to happen to become Premier League champions in 2024?

The equation is now very simple. If City beat West Ham on the final day Guardiola’s team will be champions for a record fourth successive season.

Anything less than victory over David Moyes’ team and it will be time for nervous glances towards Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal host Everton.

If City fail to beat West Ham and Sunday’s games end with Arsenal victorious against Everton the 20-year wait will be over and the Gunners will have a fourth Premier League title.

Even if City draw, an Arsenal victory would be enough for Arteta’s team to claim the title on goal difference because they go into the final weekend one goal better off.

When is the Premier League final day 2023/2024?

The 2023/24 Premier League season concludes on Sunday, May 19. In the interest of fairness, all 10 matches kick off at the same time: 4 p.m. BST (11 a.m. ET).
