Approximately 24 people sustained critical injuries in a mosque explosion at Gadan Village, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
SP Abdullahi Haruna, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to Haruna, the explosion occurred during the “Subhi Prayer” around 0520hrs. Upon receiving the report, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, the Commissioner of Police for Kano State Command, swiftly deployed the command’s combined teams, including experts in Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN), led by CSP Haruna Isma’il, along with other Crime-Scene Policemen led by Divisional Police Officer, CSP Haruna Iliya.
The area was cordoned off, and all 24 victims, comprising 20 male adults and four male children, were evacuated and promptly transported to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano for urgent medical attention.
Preliminary forensic analysis suggests a suspected petrol explosion. A comprehensive investigation is underway, with the principal suspect, identified as Shafi’u Abubakar, aged 38 years, already apprehended and in police custody. Abubakar allegedly carried out the act out of hostility stemming from prolonged family disputes over inheritance, as those he accused of cheating him were present in the mosque at the time.
While Abubakar remains in police custody, further investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided in due course.
