House of Rep Orders Probe into Ministry of Foreign Affairs Operations

During Thursday’s plenary session in Abuja, the House of Representatives directed its Committee on Foreign Affairs to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its missions.

The motion, brought forward by lawmaker Ben Etanabene of the PDP representing Delta State, highlighted the need for reforms within the ministry and its associated entities to enhance service delivery.

Etanabene expressed concerns over the challenges faced by Nigerians abroad, including issues related to consular services, illegal detentions, and harsh conditions experienced by citizens in foreign countries.

He noted the difficulties Nigerians encounter in obtaining visas, citing high fees and complicated application processes outsourced to agents by embassies.

The lawmaker also raised issues regarding staffing, appointments, postings, and disciplinary matters within the missions, highlighting instances of exceeding local staff ceilings and resultant financial strains.

The House, in response, tasked the Committee on Foreign Affairs with conducting a thorough investigation and presenting its findings within three weeks.
