Chad Prepares for Presidential Election Amid Transition from Military Rule

Chad is set to hold a presidential election on Monday, aiming to bring an end to three years of military rule and pave the way for democracy.

General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, who assumed power in 2021 after suspending the constitution and establishing himself as the president of the Transitional Military Council, is reportedly the frontrunner among the 10 candidates.

The 40-year-old took over leadership following the death of his father, who had governed Chad with an iron grip since 1990. His father passed away from injuries sustained on the frontline while visiting troops in the north combating rebels.

Chad, with a population of approximately 19 million, has never witnessed a peaceful transfer of power since gaining independence from France in 1960.

Déby had initially pledged that his presidency would serve as a temporary measure until Chad transitioned to a democratic government. However, his regime has suppressed opposition demonstrations, leading to doubts among voters and observers about the fairness of the upcoming election
