The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has said that the Federal Government through N-HYPPADEC have been taking decisive action to address the root causes of flooding and mitigate its impact in Kogi and other states where the Commission operates.
Senator Akume, while commissioning the Flood Control Project put in place by the N-HYPPADEC in Koton/Karfe, Kogi State, said the establishment of N-HYPPADEC was a proactive response to the challenges of flood disaster in Nigeria.
The SGF who was represented by his Chief of Staff to Mr. Simon Tyungu, commended N-HYPPADEC for its quick response in mitigating flood disaster in Kogi and other member states.
“It was in the light of these pressing realities that the Federal Government through N-HYPPADEC took decisive action to address the root causes of flooding and mitigate its impact here in Kogi and other states where the Commission operates.”
“The construction of the Koton Karfe Flood Control Project stands as a testament to Mr. President’s resolve to ameliorate the sufferings of the people it is meant to serve. On this note, I commend the entire Management team of N-HYPPADEC, with special acknowledgment to the Managing Director, for their tireless efforts in ensuring the successful completion of this project.
“With the inauguration of this critical infrastructure, and the commitment of the Commission to replicate efforts like these in other flood-prone communities, we can look forward to a future where the specter of devastating floods no longer looms over our communities.
“This project aligns with the vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. It is one of the several markers signifying that we are moving into a new era of resilience and progress for our nation.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to address the challenges posed by extreme weather events and natural disasters, particularly in Kogi and other member states of N-HYPPADEC.
“We are all too familiar with the devastating impact of floods and other calamities on the lives and livelihoods of our fellow citizens in these communities. In fact, the establishment of N-HYPPADEC was a proactive response to these challenges, and the swift action the Commission has taken following the 2022 floods, reflects its commitment to safeguarding our communities.
“The 2022 floods, which ravaged various parts of the country, including Koton Karfe, resulted in untold human suffering and economic disruption. The repercussions of this disaster were felt far and wide, affecting not only the residents of this community but also disrupting vital routes that connect different regions of our country.
“The gridlock that ensued here at Koton Karfe on the Abuja-Lokoja highway served as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive flood control measures in this area. That incident would forever be remembered as one of the tragic moments when one of the most important roads linking Northern and Southern parts of the country got submerged by floodwaters.
“However, the completion of this project is just the beginning of our journey towards a safer and more secure future. It is incumbent upon each and every member of this community to actively participate in the maintenance and upkeep of this infrastructure. I urge all community and traditional leaders here present, as well as youth organiSations, to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring that the flood control measures remain effective and operational.
“With great pride and optimism, I hereby declare the Koton Karfe Flood Control Project officially commissioned,” he declared.
In his remark, the Managing Director N-HYPPADEC, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri, said N-HYPPADEC had embarked on a journey of solidarity and resilience, designing and implementing a comprehensive flood control solution to address the recurrent floods terrifying Koton Karfe, through meticulous assessment and in-depth analysis.
He stressed the Commission had identified the root cause of the flooding, which was a result of the unchecked flow of water from hills upstream, exacerbated by natural topographical features.
The occasion, he said, has provided another opportunity to reflect back to the harrowing events of 2022 when devastating floods swept across the country, leaving behind a trail of destruction and despair.
According to him, the resilient people of Koton Karfe bore witness to the ravaging force of nature as homes were submerged into floodwaters, livelihoods were lost and socio-economic activities were tragically disrupted.
“N-HYPPADEC embarked on a journey of solidarity and resilience, designing and implementing a comprehensive flood control solution to address the recurrent floods plaguing Koton Karfe. Through meticulous assessment and in-depth analysis, we identified the root cause of the flooding, which was a result of the unchecked flow of water from hills upstream, exacerbated by natural topographical features.
“Today, we are going to commission the completion of this flood control drainage project as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the present administration under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to the welfare and prosperity of Nigerians. We do so with a renewed sense of hope and optimism. This project, representing an investment of about 420 million Naira, stands not just as a physical structure but as a symbol of resilience, unity and collective action.
“The drainage spans a total length of 625 meters, comprising various components. We have integrated a line stretching 499.5 meters, complemented by an earth drain of 125.5 meters. Intersecting these drains are 4 double cell culverts, strategically placed to facilitate water flow. To enhance accessibility within the vicinity, we have incorporated 3 pedestrian bridges for safer passage of residents and commuters.
“Additionally, to manage surface runoff efficiently, inlet block line drains totaling 161 meters have been installed along the drainage route, with a stone-pitched area of 550 meters to avoid erosion and ensure longevity and stability in the face of harsh weather conditions.
“Beyond flood mitigation, the health benefits of this drainage system are substantial. By preventing recurrent flooding, we are safeguarding public health by reducing the risk of waterborne diseases, mold growth and other health hazards associated with stagnant water and flooding. Furthermore, the improved drainage will enhance environmental hygiene and overall well-being within the community,” he added.
