Ogun Chief Judge pardons three prison inmates

As part of initiatives to alleviate congestion in correctional facilities across Ogun State, Chief Judge Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu has extended amnesty to three prison inmates.

During her visit to the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ilaro, Yewa South local government area, Justice Dipeolu emphasized that this action aims to further reduce overcrowding in the facility.

Expressing concern over the challenging conditions prevalent in correctional facilities nationwide, she emphasized the state’s commitment to preventing inmate loss due to overcrowding.

“The conditions here at the correctional centre have not improved, It is evident that overcrowding is rampant, even without official statistics, this overcrowding particularly concerns those awaiting trial, as they suffer without having been found guilty”, she said.

However, she assured that action would be taken to address the issue of congestion. She emphasized that while courts strive to expedite cases, it is essential to tackle the root causes of congestion.

Justice Dipeolu highlighted the unacceptable situation of inmates awaiting trial since 2018. To address this, Joseph Apan, Nureni Oladosu, and Babatunde Fagbayi were released during her prison visit and jail delivery exercise.

The Controller of the Correctional Centre, Saliu Adepoju, expressed appreciation to the chief judge and her team for the exercise, commending her adherence to judicial ethics.
