Tensions between Benin and Ile-Ife over historical superiority claims took a new turn as the Benin Palace announced the suspension of certain traditional functionaries. The move comes after a video surfaced showing the functionaries, during a visit to the Ooni of Ife’s palace, declaring allegiance to the Ooni and implying the superiority of his stool.
The Benin Palace, reacting to the incident, accused the men of distorting the historical connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni-ship of Ife. Among those suspended, according to a statement by Chief Sam Igbe, the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin Kingdom, are Johnbull Igbinosun, Iduhonre (Ihogbe), S.E. Aigbiremwen, Efesieoghoba (Ogbelaka), and two other Ogbelaka functionaries, Ogbeide Osagie and Osamudiame Edo.
Chief Igbe stated, “The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has noted with concern video clips circulating on social media featuring certain traditional functionaries from Benin engaging in a sacrilegious display of falsehood against the Benin Custom.” He clarified that the individuals falsely claimed to represent the Omo N’ObaN’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, during their encounter with the Ooni of Ife.
