Lagooz school gifts N35m scholarships to indigent pupils

Lagooz Schools in Agege, Lagos, has granted scholarships worth N35.7 million to 10 deserving students who excelled in its Mathematics competition.

During the award presentation ceremony on Thursday, Mr. Yomi Otubela, the proprietor of Lagooz Schools, disclosed that the scholarships were intended to support the secondary school education of underprivileged children.

This initiative marks the seventh edition of the Lagooz Schools Mathematics Scholarship program. The students participated in mathematics and other subjects, following which they underwent screening, along with their parents, to determine their financial need.

While explaining the purpose of setting up the scholarship, he said, “The aim of this scholarship is to assist the Federal Government to reduce out-of-school children from the streets. We gave 10 students now; we hope to give more in soon. And for us here, parents can walk in here and tell us their challenges and we will help according to our ability.

“Likewise, some of us have had bad experiences growing up and challenges of going to a standard school, so we feel it will be good to assist the children who are now in similar situations to access quality education.”

He added that every child was valuable, saying parents and teachers should not downgrade any child.

“Every child is valuable, no child Is dull and all children are born to be great. Don’t stereotype any child. A child who is not good academically can be good in other skills. It is left for the school, teacher, or parents to discover.”

The mathematics teacher, The Jannah Sprout School, Egbeda, Lagos, Mrs Khadija Abubakar, who presented six children for the competition and five of them won scholarships advised, “In mathematics, you need to start from the foundation and take them accordingly.

“You will move to the next stage, engage them in competition by the time they do a lot of competitions they will get used to the questions, we use a lot of textbooks, and we teach them in detail. Teachers should dedicate their time, put in their best and always pray to God when teaching. They should also work with parents on these parts you can’t cover alone. The parents are needed.”
