The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Nasarawa State Council, has decided to suspend its planned strike following intervention from the state government.
The association had been advocating for better working conditions for its members.
In a letter addressed to Governor Abdullahi Sule, signed by Attah Ayaka Avre and Alaku Ayuba, the Chairman and Secretary of the association respectively, NANNM announced the suspension of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government on March 12, 2024, after an emergency meeting of the State Executive Council (SEC) on Tuesday.
The decision to suspend the ultimatum was made after the state government intervened in the matter, according to the association.
“The ultimatum has been put on hold while we observe the implementation of the hazard allowance to take effect in April 2024.
“The SEC in session acknowledges and appreciates His Excellency, Engineer Abdullahi A. Sule, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State for his concerted effort to maintain the existing industrial harmony amongst the health sector unions through his swift intervention.
“The SEC in session highly commended the meeting held separately with the Honorable Commissioner of Health, Dr Gaza Gwamna and His Excellency, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, the Deputy Governor in an attempt to meet the demands presented by NANNM.
“The SEC in session also observes and applauds the pronouncement and commitment to implement hazard allowance in April 2024 by the Executive Governor through the Deputy Governor in a meeting held with all the health sector unions in his office on Wednesday, March 27th,” the letter dated April 3rd, read in part.
NANNM urged Sule to direct the appropriate organ to put the government’s position and commitment into writing to strengthen the association.
They also urged the government to sustain the discussion on the modalities for the implementation of other demands of the association.
“As a peace-loving, understanding and noble association cum trade union, we remain resolute and committed to maintaining a harmonious industrial relationship with the Government for an effective and efficient healthcare service delivery to the citizens of Nasarawa State and beyond,” NANNM further affirmed.
