The panel set up by Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa of Edo State to investigate allegations of misconduct against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu began its proceedings on Wednesday. Led by retired Justice S. A. Omonuwa, the panel was established in response to the state House of Assembly’s resolution to impeach Shaibu.
During the panel session, Mr. Joe Ohiafi, Deputy Clerk, Legal, represented the House of Assembly, while Prof Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN) represented Shaibu.
The impeachment process is seen as the latest development in the ongoing conflict between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki, reportedly stemming from Shaibu’s intention to run for Edo governor this year.
In a statement issued last Thursday, administrative secretary George Odidi announced, “Notice is hereby given that, following the inauguration of the aforementioned panel by His Lordship the Hon. Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Daniel Okungbowa, in accordance with Section 188 Subsection 5 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the panel will commence its proceedings at the Judges Conference room, New High Court Complex, Benin City on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 10 am sharp.”
“All parties and their legal representatives are required to be present on the specified day, with the complainant expected to present its case,” the statement concluded.
