Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a 44-year-old opposition candidate, has officially become the fifth President of Senegal.

In a ceremony held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, Faye assumed office, succeeding former President Macky Sall. The inauguration took place in the new town of Diamniadio, near Dakar, and was attended by various African leaders, including Nigeria’s President and Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of States and Government, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Faye’s ascension to the presidency makes him the youngest elected president on the African continent, marking a significant milestone in Senegalese politics.
