Gunmen attacked a police patrol team along Old Garaki road in Okigwe, Imo State on Saturday, resulting in the tragic deaths of two police officers.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, told journalists that the gunmen ambushed the security team while they were on duty.
Okoye explained that the attackers threw dynamite at the police vehicle before engaging in a shootout with the officers.
The police command has vowed to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous act. According to Okoye, “The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma has condemned the attack and gruesome murder of personnel of Mopol 18, Owerri, by gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN). The officers were ambushed in the early hours of today, 23/03/2024 while on patrol duties along old Gariki Road Okigwe by the disgruntled elements who threw dynamite on the officer’s patrol vehicle and engaged them in a protracted gunfight.”
He added, “In the process, two officers paid the ultimate price while four others survived the attack.”
Upon receiving the distressing news, CP Aboki Danjuma, along with other officials, immediately visited the crime scene for assessment. The police chief has instructed all relevant units to collaborate with other security agencies to track down the perpetrators.
Furthermore, the police have intensified patrols and raids in Okigwe to prevent future incidents.
Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased officers, the Commissioner of Police assured the public that the command will not tolerate any attacks on security personnel. He pledged to ensure that those responsible for the attack face justice.
